did some careful route planning on which direction to travel for best appreciation of the Mojave desert

best made plans
loaded up with gasoline, water and written instructions (knowing there would be phone signal issues) and said goodbye to bill and zep over delicious home-cooked pancakes
got to our turn-off into Death Valley from the I-15 to find it was CLOSED!

not sure if it was closed for roadworks or just because it was too HOT?
we stopped at Baker-for-a-burger to reconsider our onward journey options
on the edge of the desert 'the world's largest thermometer' read 117F / 47c degrees
perhaps it was a good idea / god telling us we shouldn't be driving into Death Valley?

did stop to talk to the guys practicing for the BAJA 400 in Mexico in a couple of weeks

these 1000bhp / 145mph 'flying' machines are amazing
the drivers have air conditioning pumped directly into their helmets
would like to have hung about and shot some more photos of these guys in action but again, it was too feckin HOT

had to stop for the crescent dunes solar park too
from a distance
wishing i'd stayed on the I-15 to vegas but we were heading south a bit with our messed up route

these three HUGE towers look like something out of a film with people trying to communicate with aliensĀ
(not aliens from alien fresh jerky)

somewhere round 'christmas tree pass' i got pulled for speeding

too hot for tickets
i thought i was was on a 75mph (Nevada) road but the nice policeman said i was doing 90 in a 65
while waiting for the policeman to check my passport and license, Lucy didnt agree with me that it was 'all part of the adventure' and may have aid something about 'STUPID MAN'?
i dont THINK she was talking about the policeman...
regardless, i charmed the policeman with my polite, white, Englishman-on-holiday apology and he kindly let me off with a 'watch your speed and have a good rest of your holiday'

decided we had enough driving round a desert and didn't double back on ourselves for GOFFS

sons boosted about on jet skis up the smelly Colorado river for a while as we waited on the 'beach' and tried to avoid angry red ants
at sunset it was 44 degrees
by evening it was a mild 38 as we went swimming in the hotel pool, which felt like a hot bath
we're in a weird casino hotel south of vegas: easing us into the madness
