San Fran city break

next to us in this park, there was a homeless guy punching himself in the face repeatedly to make his teeth clatter shut

kinda spoilt the view

as charming as the architecture and city is and the surrounding stunning countryside, the out of control homeless crisis in SF is a major issue

after a pleasant (tourist must) cable-car ride to fisherman's wharf and back

we drove to Mission (a less touristy area in SF) for off-the-hook Mexican food

on the street just before the restaurant, a (seemingly homeless) couple started fighting and one of them started waving round a large kitchen knife right in front of us

the homeless people here seem to be off their tits and violent

later this same day, after more sorbet for pudding (aka dinner) back in the center, a homeless guy REALLY off his tits was screaming at passing traffic, then took his shirt off and started aggressively running at some people walking near us

we left the area in the opposite direction but hadn't walked far before the guy had come back on the other side of the road and then and was coming towards us, absolutely unpredictable in his actions and demeanour.

i didnt want to turn to face him to give him more engagement, but i was really uncomfortable with having my back to him too

even with our trained fighter Z with us: best just to leave

fortunately he changed direction again and we were able to get back to our truck and scarper

this wasn't late at night

it wasn't in the tenderloin

SF feels sketchy AF, even in the middle of the city

definitely need to be street aware there
